J’Alan Terry Hoping to Become Next RB Target

With Jae Lamar committing to Georgia on Wednesday, Clemson is in search of its next running back target.

One potential candidate is J’Alan Terry (Coosa Christian, Gadsden, AL). The three-star back has visited Clemson several times now, including a spring stop, as well as working out at Dabo Swinney’s high school camp earlier this month.

Terry spent the morning session working out at running back before moving to receiver for the afternoon session. It is the second time in the past three summers he has worked out at camp.

“It was a lot better,” Terry told The Clemson Insider. “CJ (Spiller), he handpicked a few guys, and he was really pushing us. It went pretty well, I feel like I did pretty good. CJ was talking to me a lot, telling me some things I can get better at, just coaching me up. Then, coach Swinney rode over on the golf cart and talked to me for a few minutes. He liked what he saw. In session two, I did receiver, and I impressed coach (Tyler) Grisham too.”

Part of the conversations he had with Swinney and Spiller revolved around a potential offer at some point in the future.

“During the season, maybe,” Terry said. “They want to see how the season goes because mine was kind of cut short last year.”

Despite averaging 13.2 yards per carry last season, Terry has been flying under the radar, and judging by his film, he might be a little undervalued by the recruiting services. As things stand, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Tennessee and Vanderbilt are his Power-4 offers at this point, lending credence to the idea that he may be somewhat overlooked.

For that reason, Terry is in no rush to make a decision. While he rushed for more than 750 yards last year, he was playing behind a senior on his team. This season, he is likely to take on a more prominent role, increasing his exposure.

“I don’t even know,” Terry said about a timeline for a decision. “I was planning on deciding sometime before the end of the summer, but things can change.”

Clemson, Arkansas and Mississippi State are three other schools Terry is also hearing a lot from these days. Terry says he and Spiller talk quite often.

“He was a great player,” Terry said. “I think he can develop me into the type of player that I want to be. Being able to be coached by somebody like that would be great. It would be really good.”

While the Tigers may be in search of a new running back target, it’s possible the staff takes a methodical approach before zeroing in on the next one, and Terry fully understands the process. He is just hoping he does get that call at some point, because one of his biggest goals is playing for a national title contender.

While Clemson takes the next steps in indentifying its next target at the position, Terry is remaining patient, hoping that offer will come. It’s one he has wanted for quite some time. In fact, he is already talking about being on hand for the big season-opener against LSU. Who knows, maybe that will be the day.

“It would mean a lot,” Terry said. “I want to win a national championship when I get to college, and I feel like they are a national championship team right now.”
