Clemson has a lot of production to replace at the tight end position.
Jake Bringingstool exited as the program’s all-time leader in career receptions (127), leaving a major void that needs to be filled.
While Olsen Patt-Henry is now the most experienced player in the room, having logged close to 350 career snaps, Josh Sapp is now the longest tenured, and the redshirt junior believes the Tigers have the talent in place to replace the production lost with Briningstool now gone.
“We all love the room,” Sapp said. “Good competition in the room. Healthy competition, I would say. Honestly, I just think we help each other, push each other, make each other better. Learn from each other. It is a great space.”
In fact, Sapp went as far as to echo the sentiments offered up by Christian Bentancur, who said he believed Clemson could have the best group of tight ends in the country.
“Most definitely, I can say that as well,” Sapp said. “With us pushing each other, we can all be an option. Never a dropoff when we are on the field.”
The Tigers also have a deep and talented group of wide receivers. With Antonio Williams, Bryant Wesco, TJ Moore, Cole Turner and Tyler Brown all returning, as well as Tristan Smith being added via the transfer portal, Cade Klubnik should have a plethora of options at his disposal.
With so many options out wide, the opportunities for the tight ends might not be as prevalent. That just means they need to take advantage of the opportunities they do get.
“Just catch everything that he throws,” Sapp said. “That is the only way that we can handle that, for sure. Our receiver room is definitely deep. We got a lot of weapons everywhere.”
On top of all of that production that returns at receiver, the Tigers also return four starters along the offensive line. With so much experience back, and despite any questions regarding how the Tigers replace Briningstool, Sapp believes there is a lot of potential for the offense to take a big step forward in year three of the Garrett Riley era.
“Definitely keep it up from last year,” Sapp said. “Just take a step forward each year. I feel we’ve been progressing each year since he has been here, so just take that next step.”
