Newcomer Observations: Camp Day 6

CLEMSON — For the first time in camp, the Clemson football team was in full pads as the team practiced in Jervery Meadows on Wednesday.

Several freshman offensive linemen were sporting yellow, non-contact jerseys, giving a glimpse into exactly how physical some of these practices during fall camp can be for first-year players.

– Easton Ware, Brayden Jacobs and Rowan Byrne were in yellow and working off to the side. Jacobs and Ware, both of whom have been working at tackle, have been two of the standout freshmen early in camp. Jacobs has even been getting some reps with the second group. None looked to be seriously injured, but we will have to wait for official word from Dabo Swinney following practice.

– Gideon Davidson was running fourth in the rotation today, behind Adam Randall, Keith Adams Jr. and David Eziomume. It only takes on quick look to see how gifted a runner he is. He just seems to glide with the ball in his hands. One drill had the backs being forced to avoid a giant medicine ball after taking the handoff, and Davidson was the only one of the four to remain on his feet. Each of the other three attempted to hurdle the ball and failed, while Davidson just brushed it off with his strength and kept trucking.

– Continue to be overly impressed with Amare Adams. He is extremely powerful, winning several of his one-on-one reps. He just makes it all look effortless. While there was no set rotation in those drills, Adams has been getting some work with the second group at previous practices.

– Jeremiah Alexander continues to impress. Again, there was no set rotation, but his athleticism is off the charts. Anxious to see exactly what his role will be.

– Chris Denson looks like he has a lot of the tools required to be a successful quarterback at this level. He is just still pretty raw. One thing he does really well in some of these drills is throwing on the run. He still has some work to do when it comes to footwork, but there is a lot to like about the left-handed signal caller. He was fourth in the rotation behind Cade Klubnik, Chirs Vizzina and Trent Pearman. Ethan Anderson was running fifth behind Denson.

– Hunter Helms, who is back serving as a player-coach, was fully dressed, but didn’t take part in any of the drills we observed. Helms was watching Garrett Riley and Tajh Boyd intently as he looks to get his coaching career jump-started.
