CLEMSON — Adam Randall will take the field Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in a familiar uniform, but in an unfamiliar role.
Randall, previously a wide receiver, will line up in the backfield as a running back for No. 4 Clemson after impressing coaches with his adaptability during last season’s College Football Playoff game at Texas. Put into the role because of injuries, he thrived without prior experience and everyone took notice.
“Just be the best person you can be every single day,” Randall said.
Despite the position change, Randall’s mindset stays steady. He understands the importance of chemistry with the offensive line and knows that his success is tied to theirs.
“You have to give your offensive lineman the best chance to help protect you,” he said.
With limited experience in the running back room, Randall has quickly become one of the most seasoned players in the room. He embraced the leadership role from the start.
“I had to take it by the helm and show the young guys how to work, and they showed me how to be a running back,” Randall said. “Setting a standard of what it should look like.”
Even now, Randall jokes he sometimes still “looks like a wide receiver” on the field, but his humility has won over the trust of his teammates.
“To be a leader you have to be able to listen first,” he said. “Listening to them put me in a position to lead because they know and understand I want what’s best for the team and for all of them.”
Randall credits fellow backs Jarvis Green and David Eziomume for teaching him how to adjust his pace.
“Watching them be a running back” helped him shift from wanting to be the fastest guy on the field to the more patient, vision-heavy demands of the backfield.
He’s also been studying film of teammates and NFL players to refine his skills and learn. But the help and trust of the running back room stands out most.
“Every single day has been a joy,” Randall said of working with Coach Spiller and teammates like Keith Adams and Gideon Davidson
Now set to start Saturday night against No. 9 LSU at Memorial Stadium, Randall is embracing the moment.
“Hey, you’re a college football player, hey you get to run out there at whatever point in time,” he said.
As for what’s next?
“I’ve been playing football for so long. Just whatever they call me to do, I’m going to do it,” Randall said.
