Swinney Explains Why Tigers Broke Out Purple Jerseys vs. GT

Clemson broke out an unusual uniform combination this past Saturday, wearing its purple jersey over white pants with the orange helmet when it played Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

During his weekly radio show Monday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked what the primary decision behind wearing the purple jerseys was, and if the Tigers will do that again anytime soon.

“We may,” Swinney said.

Swinney explained that the Tigers went with the purple jerseys because Georgia Tech chose to wear white as the home team, something that doesn’t typically happen.

“It was just kind of a weird situation, in that we’re not the true home team on the road, and they chose to wear their whites,” Swinney said. “It was something we talked about. The guys wanted to maybe look at doing that when we do go on the road and you’re not the home team, but the home team wants to wear white. It doesn’t happen very often.”

Swinney added that the purple jerseys “looked good, we just didn’t play as good as we needed to” in what was ultimately a 24-21 loss to the Yellow Jackets.

It marked Clemson’s first time wearing purple over white since a 2008 loss to Maryland and the first time on the road since a 39-3 win at Georgia Tech in 2003.
