ESPN’s Rece Davis on Clemson: ‘I Was Wrong’

College GameDay host Rece Davis was all aboard the Clemson bandwagon over the offseason.

Davis was extremely high on Dabo Swinney’s team entering the 2025 season. In fact, Davis had Clemson at No. 1 in his preseason AP Top 25 ballot and picked the Tigers to win it all this year.

Now, after the 1-2 start to the season, Davis is having to take the flak for being on the Clemson hype train – and admit he was wrong about the Tigers.

“I’m going to get mocked. I picked them preseason No. 1. I picked them to win the national championship,” Davis noted on the College GameDay Podcast this week. “I think [ESPN’s] Bill Connelly has made some semi-snide swipes, you know, ‘I didn’t see what everyone else did.’

“I saw three first-round draft picks on the defensive line. I saw a veteran quarterback. I saw explosive receivers. None of them are dominating the game, not the way they should. They still have offensive line problems. They have for a long time. They haven’t been able to get around it. So far, up to this point, Bill and those who doubted Clemson were right, and I was wrong.”

Davis added that Clemson’s “pieces looked good, and for whatever reason, they haven’t fit together,” as the Tigers haven’t performed up to their potential through the first three games.

“They haven’t played to their capabilities,” he said. “And LSU’s a terrific team. Georgia Tech’s a really good team. No shame in losing those games to those teams. Troy’s a solid outfit. Clemson hasn’t played to its capability one time. Not one time this year. And now they’re up against it, with two losses and already a conference loss, too.”

The Tigers look to bounce back from last week’s loss to the Yellow Jackets and earn their first ACC win on Saturday when they welcome Syracuse to Death Valley (noon, ESPN).
