CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney says they are only getting to October, so when it comes to making changes to his staff, it is a little too early for that kind of thinking.
“We got eight games. We got a long way to go,” he said Tuesday as the Tigers get set to visit North Carolina on Saturday (noon, ESPN). Why can’t we be the hottest team in America? Why not?
“I mean, there ain’t no quit. We got a long way to go. We are just now getting into October. September, boy, we want to forget that one. It was a rough start, but we have a long way to go.”
That’s why Dabo Swinney says he is not in any hurry to make any in-season staff changes. He did say he will hold his staff accountable, especially after the way Clemson has started the season. The Tigers 1-3 start (0-2 ACC) is the program’s worst since 2004.
“You play the season and you get results. You have accountability,” he said. “It is daily accountability, as far as how we communicate and all of that stuff. You let the chips fall where they are. You go play the games and if you have to make adjustments, you make them.”
Swinney called out himself and his coaching staff during his weekly press conference, saying it has been a coaching failure and how much they have failed as coaches in helping the players be prepared and ready to succeed.
The good news, he says, it’s all fixable.
“Again, it is all football stuff. And if we have to fix football stuff, we will,” Swinney said. “One way or another, whether its coaching, personnel or whatever. That is always the case.”
The Tigers will see if they can get things fixed when they head to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on the Tar Heels at Kenan Stadium.
