CLEMSON — Despite a strong start for the young receiver, Clemson’s top target wants to be even better.
Sophomore receiver Bryant Wesco, Jr., has been the top target for starting quarterback Cade Klubnik and it is not even close. With five touchdowns and 389 yards off 24 total catches, Wesco has seen a lot of attention on the field as he continues to grow into a crucial part of the offense.
Even with his strengths and skills, along with his early impact for the Tigers, the receiver wants to perfect his game, specifically with his recent collection of drops.
“I just looked at everything I messed up on throughout these past four games, just taking it all in,” Wesco said. “Where we are at right now, just completely resetting the season into a no-wins, no-losses type of season. We are just starting off completely fresh.”
That freshness starts with Wesco’s team-first mentality. The stats and yards don’t mean anything if the team’s success is low, and his focus seems to be on throwing away the start of the season, regardless of how well it went for himself.
“Going out there, and just needing to execute,” he said. “I feel like, in these past four games, that’s what we haven’t been doing, but we have the players, so I feel confident in us.”
The rough start has been hard on the entire team, especially for the players who are giving their all on the field to get a chance at victory. Alongside his stellar plays and catches, a few drops have occurred during tight games, including a drop on the sideline that would’ve extended Clemson’s late-game drive against Georgia Tech.
Wesco recently looked, like the rest of the team, to do whatever he can to improve, and lowering his drops is one of those areas of focus.
“I always get extra work on the JUGS (machine),” he said. “Sometimes, when you get in the game, no matter how much work you do, you always just try and do what you think you have to do, turn up too quickly. So, I just have to revert back to what I always do in practice, looking with my eyes.”
Wesco will have the chance to continue to get better when the Tigers travel to face off against the UNC Tar Heels on Saturday at noon (ESPN) in Chapel Hill, NC.
