Halftime Analysis: Clemson Rolling In Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Clemson has absolutely controlled this one from the opening kick.

The Tigers have rolled out to a 35-3 lead over North Carolina as the offense has racked up 367 yards of offense. Cade Klubnik is 18-of-20 for 225 yards with four touchdowns. TJ Moore has five catches for 108 yards with a 75-yard touchdown.

Clemson had not scored 28 in any of the previous four games this season, and on Saturday, they did it in one quarter of play. The 28 first-quarter points were the most since doing it against NC State last season.

Complimentary Football: Dabo Swinney has been asking for it all season, and he finally has it this afternoon. Clemson scored touchdowns on each of their first four possessions, while the defense really settled in after allowing a field goal in the Tar Heels’ first possession. In fact, the Tigers forced four consecutive three-and-outs after that field goal drive. On those four possessions, North Carolina was held to just -5 yards.

Hit the Layups: Clemson’s offense finally got off to a hot start, and a big part of that was just hitting the easy ones. On the Tigers’ second touchdown drive, Cade Klubnik hit Bryant Wesco with a short pass that turned into a 36-yard gain. On the next play, Klubnik hit Adam Randall on a swing pass that he took it 35-yards to the house. It’s amazing what just hitting the layups can do for an ailing offense.

More Creativity On Offense: Nice to see a little more creativity by Garrett Riley. It began with the trick play on the first play from scrimmage that set the tone and continued, including running a passing play to Randall out of a two-back set. That pass resulted in a 23-yard touchdown that made it 28-3 late in the first quarter.

How Bad Is This UNC Defense: This North Carolina defense is downright bad. At all three levels. Shoddy tackling, bad angles, and terrible pass coverage. You name it and we have seen it.

Tom Allen Out of Booth: After spending the first four games up in the booth, defensive coordinator Tom Allen is on the sidelines for this one.

The defense has only allowed 78 total yards, and the Heels have just 12 rushing yards. North Carolina is also 0-for-6 on third down.

Big Day for Bentancur: Christian Bentancur has caught the first two touchdowns of his career. The big tight end has two catches for 45 yards. One touchdown went for 43 yards, while the second went for eight.
