During his weekly radio show Monday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney voiced his frustration with the “inconsistency all across the nation” when it comes to officiating, specifically as it pertains to targeting and roughing the passer calls.
“I’m not saying it’s easy to officiate, but it just seems like there’s a ton of inconsistency all across the nation – not just in this league,” Swinney said.
“So, I have no idea. When I think it’s targeting, it’s not. And when I think it’s roughing, it’s not. And when I think it’s not, it is. I have no idea.”
There was a questionable roughing the passer call against Clemson defensive lineman Stephiylan Green in last Saturday’s game at North Carolina, and Swinney thinks Green’s hit was not nearly as bad as a hit there was on Clemson quarterback Christopher Vizzina, which wasn’t called rougher the passer.
“I have no idea what targeting is or roughing the passer. I have no clue,” Swinney said. “Yeah, it’s just crazy. It’s hard. It’s hard to coach it. These are big people. They’re not ninja turtles. They’re not superhuman people. It’s just really hard.
“I thought CV got hit right in the chin. I thought that was a lot worse than Stephiylan. You work so hard to get a sack, and he’s trying to brace himself. I mean, these aren’t gymnasts. These are big people, and we’ve made it really, really hard on these defensive guys.”
Swinney reiterated how difficult it is to coach such plays for big players.
“You just have to tell them to wrap up and try to fall off to the side the best you can,” he said.
“It’s a challenge. It’s frustrating. But again, the one on CV, I thought that was a roughing. He hit him high. We’ve had that called on us. So, I don’t know.”
