Swinney’s Wednesday Practice Report

CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney spoke to the media following Wednesday’s practice at the Smart Family Media Center.

This was Swinney’s last availability ahead of Saturday’s game at Boston College.

Below are some of the news and notes to come from Wednesday’s media session.

–With offensive guard Elyjah Thurmon ruled out for a second straight week, Swinney was asked about the Tigers’ backup situation on the offensive line. He said there is really no one new in the mix. It will be the same guys it has been the last few weeks — Mason Wade and Harris Sewell.

–Swinney was also asked about the defense creating more turnovers. Clemson has forced just five turnovers this season and none in the last three games. Swinney said that creating turnovers comes from the defense being ready and anticipating the play. Also, getting to the quarterback more and getting hits, as well as getting their hands up and on the ball more, especially with QBs getting the ball out of their hands fast.

–The Clemson coach was also asked about what it means having Khalil Barnes back in the secondary, especially with the physicality he brings to the back end of the defense. Swinney said Barnes was a big force in last week’s win at North Carolina and that he played well.

–Swinney was also asked what he would like to see more from the Clemson running game. Last week, the Tigers ran for just 89 yards and averaged 2.9 yards per carry. “We just need to build a little more there,” he said. “There are just a few nuances we can clean up. Maybe, it is finishing a block, tacking the down guy to the second level, as opposed to coming off a little early… Setting the block up. There are all kinds of things.”
