Swinney Wants More from Run Game

CLEMSON — Though the Clemson offense appears to be getting on track, the rushing attack can be a little better. Probably a lot better.

Currently, the Tigers rank 13th in the ACC, averaging 110.8 yards per game. They are averaging just a mediocre 4.0 yards per carry, which ranks ninth in the 17-team league.

“As long as we are throwing for 350-plus, I will take that, but I think I will like to have a little bit more balance,” head coach Dabo Swinney said.

Case in point, Clemson (2-3, 1-2 ACC) ran for just 89 yards and 2.9 yards per carry in last week’s win at North Carolina. It was the second time this season the Tigers failed to rush for 100 yards in a game, as LSU held them to 31 yards and 1.6 yards per carry in the season opener.

“The biggest thing is we have some good rush games, but (last week), and I am not disappointment, but I thought there was a little bit more there,” Swinney said.

Swinney thought they should have at least ran from anywhere from 110 to 120 yards against the Tar Heels, especially considering they threw the football for 399 yards. However, the Tigers left a few plays out there.

“We should have had a big quarterback run, but we kind of reached the guy. It was a kick out, little nuances, that if you really don’t know what you’re watching, it’s not going to make sense to you,” Swinney said. “But just a few little nuances that we can clean up — maybe it its finishing a block, sustaining a block, taking the down guy to the second level, opposed to coming off a little early. Just some little things, setting the block up, there are all kinds of things.”

Clemson’s best game on the ground this season came at Georgia Tech in Week 3, as the Tigers rushed for 174 yards and averaged 5.0 yards per carry. They ran for 140 against Syracuse and averaged a season-high 6.4 yards per carry, but they had to abandon the running game because they fell too far behind in the game.

“The main thing I want to see is to be efficient,” Swinney said. “As an offense you attack what you feel the defense’s weakness is, but you have to be efficient in running the ball.”

Adam Randall leads the Tigers with 368 yards through five games, and is averaging 5.7 yards per carry. However, last week he averaged just 3.8 yards per carry and ran for just 30 yards.

Swinney and the offense is hoping they can get more out of Randall on the ground when they play at Boston College (7:30 p.m., ACCN) on Saturday.

“Some games you are going to have more explosives in the run game than in the past, but week-to-week we want to be precise in what we do, be physical at the point (of attack) and be efficient,” Swinney said.

And that is something the Tigers just have not been in the run game this season.
