For the second straight week, Clemson went on the road and took care of business against an overmatched opponent.
The Tigers (3-3, 2-2 ACC) scored on each of their first six possessions, beating Boston College 41-10, giving Clemson its 13th straight win in the series.
So, what does this latest victory mean for Dabo Swinney’s team? In the grand scheme of things, not a whole lot, but it does keep the Tigers’ slim hopes of making it back to the ACC Championship Game still alive. At least mathematically.
Clemson is now 2-2 in league play and is one of six teams with two losses in ACC play. The Tigers still need a lot of help, though. Virginia, Duke, SMU, Miami and Georgia Tech are all still unbeaten. The Yellow Jackets own the tiebreaker over the Tigers. Clemson does get SMU next and will host Duke the week after that. They won’t play Miami or Virginia. Again, a lot of help is needed.
One thing this win has shown us is that this offense can be pretty efficient when clicking on all cylinders. Cade Klubnik had another stellar outing, completing 73% of his throws before leaving late in the third quarter with an ankle injury. An injury Swinney said should not keep the quarterback out next week against SMU.
Klubnik was 22-of-30 for 280 yards with one touchdown pass. He completed 12 straight passes at one point in the first half. He completed passes to 10 different pass catchers. He also rushed 48 yards and added another touchdown via his legs.
The victory was also one more example of just how hard Clemson is to beat under Swinney when the offense passes for 200 yards or more and the rushes for 200 yards or more. The program imporved to 66-2 under Swinney when they accomplish that feat, as the Tigers racked up over 500 yards of offense, with more than 220 of those coming on the ground.
We also learned the defense still has some areas in which it needs to improve. While BC only scored 10 poits and Tom Allen’s unit held the Eagles to just 221 total yards, there were too many big plays given up. Quarterback Dylan Lonergan hit on five passes of 15 yards or longer, and running back Turbo Richard had two runs that went 10 yards or more.
However, all seven of those big plays came in the first half. BC only had 51 yards of offense after halftime. That is something to build on. The Eagles were also just 1-of-9 on third and fourth down opportunites over the final two quarters.
However, the biggest takeaway might just be that this team hasn’t thrown in the towel on the season, despite the disappointing 1-3 start. It was difficult to take much away from the blowout win over the terrible North Carolina team last weekend, but on Saturday night, we saw evidence in Chestnut Hill that Clemson still has some fight left.
