Former Clemson quarterback Chase Brice did not seem to like Clemson’s offensive play-calling when backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina was in for the injured Cade Klubnik late in Saturday’s 41-10 win at Boston College.
Vizzina replaced Klubnik after the Tigers’ starting quarterback got hurt late in the third quarter, when he took a big hit and his ankle got rolled under him on a second-and-goal play from the Boston College 9-yard line.
Vizzina came in at quarterback and threw a fourth-down interception in the end zone to end the Clemson drive. The redshirt sophomore finished the game by leading the Tigers on a fourth quarter touchdown drive.
Overall, Vizzina played in three possessions and went just 1-of-3 passing for -2 yards with the interception. He also rushed four times for 19 yards.
Early in the fourth quarter, on the second possession with Vizzina in, Clemson ran three straight quarterback keepers, where Vizzina rushed for a gain of 5 yards on 1st-and-10, no gain on 2nd-and-5, and then a gain of 1 yard on third-and-5.
The drive ended with a punt, and Brice apparently didn’t like that sequence of play-calls with Vizzina at QB.
“Three QB runs in a row… are we serious,” Brice wrote in a social media post.
Added Brice: “This is the perfect time to see the development. You can still be conservative while maintaining the integrity of the offense. Clearly BC offense won’t move the ball on our defense. Let’s see if 17 can operate.”
A former Clemson fan favorite, Brice played for Clemson from 2017-19 and graduated in May 2020, before transferring to Duke for the 2020 season. The Georgia native then transferred to App State before the 2021 season and spent his final two years of eligibility playing for the Mountaineers.
Brice concluded his college career having completed 60 percent of his passes for 9,451 yards and 73 touchdowns with 36 interceptions.
Brice threw for 1,023 yards with nine touchdowns and four interceptions in 25 games at Clemson. He was of course an unsung hero of Clemson’s 2018 national championship campaign, entering in relief in a 27-23 come-from-behind victory against Syracuse to preserve what would become Clemson’s perfect 15-0 campaign.
