Swinney’s Wednesday Practice Report

CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney spoke to the media for the final time following Wednesday’s practice, as the Tigers get set to host SMU on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Clemson.

Swinney was asked several questions regrading injuries, including the health of quarterback Cade Klubnik, who suffered an ankle sprain in last week’s win over Boston College. The Clemson coach was also asked about backup Christopher Vizzina, left tackle Tristan Leigh, Bryant Wesco, Jr., Antonio Williams and SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings.

–Swinney was asked about the status of Klubnik for Saturday’s 3:30 p.m., kick on the ACCN. “Been limited, just been taking our time with him,” the head coach said. “Like I said (Tuesday), he has gone from day to day to hour to hour. Hopefully by tomorrow it will be minute to minute. Literally, getting better every hour. “Just being smart with him. He’s been able to do what he needed to do.”

–Swinney was asked what the plan was if Klubnik cannot go on Saturday. He said Vizzina will get the start. “CV is the starter for sure. We have a lot of confidence in him.” Swinney indicated Vizzina has been taking some first-team reps in practice.

–The Clemson coach was asked what Vizzina has to do the rest of the year to show the coaches he is ready to step in and be the starter next season. Swinney said he was not going to talk about that because he is worried about SMU and getting his team ready for SMU and not next season. He said Vizzina has made the most of his opportunities, but he has not received many reps to this point and it would not be fair to talk about that right now.

–Swinney said left tackle Tristan Leigh (ankle) is working himself back. He says he has been getting better, but he said they will share more on Thursday on Leigh’s status for the weekend after they talk to the trainers.

–As for SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings, Swinney says he puts a lot of pressure on the defense because he can make the scheduled throws and the off-scheduled throws, as well as sidearm throws and you name it. On a scale of 1-10 when it comes to stressing the defense, Swinney says Jennings is an 11.
