Swinney Talks Wesco’s ‘Heck of a Year’ & Next Level

As Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney put it, Bryant Wesco Jr. is having “a heck of a year” so far.

Through six games, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound sophomore wideout easily leads the Tigers in receptions (31), receiving yards (537), touchdown catches (six) and receiving yards per game (89.5). He’s currently averaging 17.3 yards per reception and leads the ACC in both receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

“If he stays healthy, he’s on his way to probably a 1,000-yard year,” Swinney said of Wesco this week. “I mean, he’s having a great year, outside of a couple plays. He’s had a couple of misses that we needed him to make in a couple of games early in the season. But he’s had a heck of a year. Made some big plays. He’s got a bunch of touchdowns. He’s finished on a couple plays. Just getting better every week.”

Wesco also made a tremendous impact as freshman in 2024, when he led the team, averaging 17.3 yards per catch. The former consensus top-35 national prospect finished with more than 700 receiving yards and had five touchdown catches while earning freshman All-American honors.

Looking ahead, what next level does Swinney think Wesco can tap into, within his game?

“As far as just the next level for him, it’s just continue his ascension,” Swinney said. “He’s so improved from a physical standpoint, from when he showed up here. There’s still more there, and that will happen as he just stays within the program and progresses. And then just from a technique, fundamental standpoint, he’s really gotten better there. He’s a very smart player. He really understands the game. He understands defense. Again, as he continues to physically get better, I think he’ll even be a better finisher on the ball.

“So, just proud of him. He’s done a heck of a job. He’s a handful.”

In addition to pacing Clemson’s receiving corps, Wesco has served as Clemson’s primary punt returner this season, returning six punts for 57 yards (9.5 average) with the longest return going for 17 yards.

“He’s done a nice job in the return game as well, and having a heck of a year,” Swinney said.
