SMU took a 10-0 lead thanks to a 70-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kevin Jennings to wide receiver Jordan Hudson in the first quarter, and then a 51-yard Sam Keltner field goal in the second period.
The Tigers got on the board midway through the second quarter with a 32-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Christopher Vizzina to wide receiver T.J. Moore, before SMU responded with a 48-yard field goal from Keltner.
SMU then added another field goal from Keltner, once again from 48 yards, to take a 16-7 lead into the locker room.
