Following Clemson’s 35-24 loss to SMU on Saturday at Memorial Stadium, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave an injury update on starting quarterback Cade Klubnik.
Of course, Klubnik did not play Saturday, snapping his 34-game starting streak. The senior signal caller sprained an ankle in last week’s win at Boston College.
During his postgame press conference after the SMU game, Swinney said Klubnik did everything he could to get better. He was in the building early all week and did everything he could to play, but he just wasn’t ready.
“I’ve never had a guy try as hard as him to be able to play,” Swinney said. “He truly did everything that he could to give himself a chance. He just couldn’t push off like he needed to.”
Redshirt sophomore Christopher Vizzina started in place of Klubnik vs. SMU, completing 29 of 42 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns.
Over the first six games this season, Klubnik completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 1,530 yards and 11 touchdown passes with five interceptions, while also rushing 104 yards and two more scores.
Following an open date next weekend, the Tigers return to the field on Saturday, Nov. 1 against Duke at Death Valley.
Swinney was asked if Klubnik will be ready to play by the Duke game.
“I hope so,” Swinney said. “He was not able to go today. Two weeks, I think much better chance. I would expect that, but I don’t know.”
Swinney did say Klubnik’s injury does not require surgery.
