Bakich Talks Pitching Depth, Return Timeline for Dane Moehler

One thing the Clemson baseball team lacked last season was quality pitching depth.

It was readily apparent much of the season, with the issue really rearing its ugly head during the ACC Championship Game against North Carolina and then again the following week in regional play.

However, if the fall is any indication, Erik Bakich’s team is in a much better spot when it comes to quality arms. While some of those are young and inexperienced, a lot of pitchers showed a lot of promise during fall ball.

Freshmen Danny Nelson, Eston Simpson, Dan Margolies and Dylan Harris all looked sharp during some of the intrasquad scrimmages. Sophomore Dion Brown might be the most improved pitcher on the roster.

Veteran Drew Titsworth has also been impressive, as have Alabama transfer Ariston Veasey and Tennessee transfer Michael Sharman.

“We have a lot of depth, and we have six guys who didn’t even pitch this weekend, from the Bananas to today,” Bakich said after the exhibition win over Alabama on Saturday. “We have Aidan Knaak, Jacob McGovern, Chance Fitzgerald, Luke Kissenberth, Dane Moehler and Jake Morris, a big 6-foot-8 lefty. There is depth already and there is more depth coming.”

Moehler is still rehabbing after an elbow injury suffered in February, and he is expected to start easing back in sometime early in the season.

“The easiest comp is probably the timeline Talan Bell was on last season,” Bakcih said. “He’s probably on that timeline of hopefully being back in action in March.”

Southpaw sophomore Talan Bell is back and now almost two years removed from an injury that delayed his debut last season. Sophomore and fellow lefty Brendan Bennett has been extremely good throughout the fall. Bennet got his feet wet last season but was ultimately shut down in an effort to get him fully healthy.

“A lot of quality arms,” Bakich said. “But I don’t know a baseball coach on the planet that would say they have too much pitching. And I am not going to be a first.”
