How Many First-Team Reps is Vizzina Getting?

CLEMSON – Dabo Swinney says quarterback Cade Klubnik is getting better each day, as Clemson gets set to host Duke this Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Klubnik missed the Tigers’ Oct. 18 loss to SMU after injuring his right ankle against Boston College the week before. But how many reps is his starting quarterback getting?

How many reps is backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina getting?

“Our first two quarterbacks get the same reps,” Swinney said after practice on Wednesday. “We rep two groups and sometimes we will interchange guys, accordingly. You get some crossover with the ones and twos. (Vizzina) gotten a lot of reps.”

If Klubnik cannot go, Vizzina will make his second straight start for the Tigers. The redshirt sophomore, though he got off to slow start, had a good day against SMU. He completed 29 of 42 passes for 317 yards and 3 TDs in the loss.

If Klubnik cannot go on Saturday, Swinney says he feels good about Vizzina leading the offense, again.

“Again, he was confident before, but as I said the other day, there is just nothing like experience,” Swinney said. “And not only experience, but positive experience to kind of reinforce what he has been doing and what you think you can do.”

Vizzina played very little prior to his start against the Mustangs. He played most of the second half in the Tigers’ win over UNC on Oct. 4 and then more when Klubnik went down with an ankle injury late in the third quarter at Boston College on Oct. 11.

Some questioned whether Vizzina could get the job done against SMU. However, he passed with flying colors.

“We have seen that in practice,” Swinney said. “He had a skip in his step, but it is one game. He has to create consistency and all that stuff with more opportunity as it comes.

“But it has been really good. I mean he had a really good (game). He has had a really good focus in practice, and he has been that way. That is one of the reasons that he played because he has really showed up each week and was prepared to go play. That is not always easy to do when you’re not getting any opportunities. So, he deserves a lot of credit for that. He has had a good week, as well.”
