‘It’s Almost Impossible’: Clemson Vet Closing in on Remarkable Feat

Clemson senior right tackle Blake Miller is getting ready to accomplish a remarkable feat this Saturday, when the Tigers host Florida State at Memorial Stadium.

After the game kicks off, Miller will start his 50th consecutive game — and break Dalton Freeman’s school record for consecutive starts by a non-specialist (49 from 2009-12).

Miller has started all 49 games played by Clemson since his arrival as a true freshman in 2022. The record he’s closing in on is even more impressive when considering the physical toll and wear and tear of playing a position as demanding as the offensive line is.

“There’s a reason why it’s never been done by a non-specialist. There’s a reason,” Swinney said following Wednesday’s practice. “I mean, it’s unheard of. It’s almost impossible. First of all, to be good enough to play as a freshman the way he did. But then, to be available so much.”

“Really cool accomplishment that may not get broken,” Swinney added. “That’s one of those that could stay there for a long, long time.”

Swinney raved about Miller, who enters Saturday’s game third in career snaps from scrimmage on record in Clemson history (3,454).

Miller needs just 46 more offensive snaps this season to join Mitch Hyatt (3,754 from 2015-18) and Will Putnam (3,564 from 2019-23) as the third player on record in Clemson history to play 3,500 career snaps from scrimmage.

Swinney sees a bright future ahead for Miller at the next level, after the 6-foot-6, 315-pounder wraps up his Clemson career this year.

“He’s an amazing football player,” Swinney said. “He is one of the most committed guys we’ve ever had come through here. He’s going to be an outstanding pro. He ain’t going to wait long to hear his name called on draft day.

“I love Blake Miller, man. He’s the epitome of what you want a Clemson Tiger to be. He loves this program, and he’s just given it all.”

Clemson is 3-5 and 2-4 in ACC play entering Saturday’s game vs. FSU (4-4, 1-4 ACC), but Swinney says you wouldn’t know what the Tigers’ record is by the way Miller — a 2022 freshman All-American and two-time All-ACC selection – goes about his business.

“You find out a lot about people when there’s some adversity and things don’t go your way,” Swinney said. “You would never know if we were undefeated or where we are, watching Blake Miller and how he shows up every day, how he comes to meetings, how he practices. He’s in there on Sundays, getting lifts when he doesn’t have to.

“That’s who he is – all the time, not just some of the time. All In, as we say, is a lifestyle for that kid. Just really happy for him.”
