Swinney Shares Details from Conversation with Saban This Week

During Saturday’s edition of College GameDay, legendary former Alabama coach and current ESPN college football analyst Nick Saban revealed that he had a conversation with Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney this week.

“I talked to Dabo this week, and I think he really has the right approach,” Saban said. “Because every obstacle has an opportunity to learn and people can grow from it. And he really wants to see how his team finishes the season, responds, learns from all the adversity they’ve had to overcome this year.”

During Swinney’s postgame press conference following Clemson’s 24-10 home win over Florida State on Saturday night — which improved the Tigers’ record this season to 4-5 (3-4 ACC) — Swinney shared some details about his conversation with Saban.

“Nick, he’s awesome,” Swinney said. “We just kind of went back and forth a little bit. The biggest thing was just like, ‘Listen, if you coach long enough…’ He said, ‘You’ve coached long enough. Sooner or later, you’ll have a season like this.’ He said, ‘But there’s opportunity in every situation. You’ll take advantage of this opportunity.’ He just wished me well. He was great. Just very supportive.”

Swinney apparently also joked a little bit with Saban — a seven-time national championship coach who led Alabama to six titles and LSU to one.

“He said, ‘Let me know if you need anything,’” Swinney recalled.

“And I said, ‘Can you come play corner for me this week?’”

Swinney and Saban faced off four times as head coaches, with a head-to-head record of 2-2. Swinney owns a 2-1 edge over Saban in title games.

“He’s great,” Swinney added. “I really appreciated him. He’s got a great perspective. He’s 74. This guy’s coached a long time. A long time. And obviously we’ve had some battles, and always great respect for him. But I really appreciated that. I really appreciated just his reaching out and his support.”
