Swinney Talks True Freshmen Who Could Play Down the Stretch

During his weekly Tuesday press conference, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney discussed true freshman tight end Logan Brooking, and whether any other true freshmen could get some snaps throughout the rest of this season.

Brooking, an NFL legacy and four-year varsity contributor in Georgia, made his college debut on special teams in last Saturday’s game against Florida State.

Brooking, who enrolled at Clemson this past January, is the son of former 15-year NFL linebacker Keith Brooking, a five-time Pro Bowl selection who was the 12th overall pick of the 1998 NFL Draft out of Georgia Tech.

Logan was rated by ESPN as a four-star prospect and the 15th-best tight end in the nation. The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder played 47 games in his prep career at Savannah (Ga.) Christian Preparatory School, collecting 84 catches for 1,206 yards and six touchdowns. He averaged 14 yards per catch over his career.

“Brooking, we went ahead and just put him on special teams,” Swinney said. “We were holding him for the last four games. He’s going to be a good player.”

Swinney said before this season that the Tigers were planning to redshirt Brooking this year.

Swinney says you could also see true freshman safety Jakarrion Kenan and true freshman offensive lineman Gavin Blanchard get some playing time, as both have yet to play this season, and thus can play down the stretch and still preserve their redshirt.

“You might see [Jakarrion] a little bit, maybe,” Swinney said. “He could pop in there somewhere. He’s got all his games left. He’s in the two-deep. He’s in a package or two defensively, and maybe some special teams. And Blanchard is probably another guy that could show up if we need him. He’s kind of been ready to play all year, and we’ve been able to hold him.”

Blanchard is a Tampa native who was ranked among the top centers in the 2025 recruiting class, while Kenan was a versatile contributor in both North Carolina and South Carolina during his prep career. Both enrolled at Clemson in January.

Clemson (4-5, 3-4 ACC) will play the first of its three remaining regular season games on Friday night at 20th-ranked Louisville (7-2, 4-2 ACC). The game is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.
