Swinney Comments on Clemson WR’s Lack of Snaps

Playing time has been hard to come by in recent weeks for Clemson wide receiver Tyler Brown.

Over the last four games, Brown is averaging only nine snaps per contest. The redshirt sophomore played eight snaps in Clemson’s most recent game at Louisville last Friday, after playing seven snaps vs. FSU, 11 vs. Duke and 10 vs. SMU.

Brown is the backup slot receiver behind Antonio Williams, and that’s a part of his lack of snaps. But is Brown not suited to playing the other receiver positions and seeing the field more that way?

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked that question during his weekly Tuesday press conference and commented on Brown’s limited snaps of late.

“Nah, we just got him right there where we need him, and ready to go if something happens to Antonio,” Swinney said. “It’s a critical position for us, and that’s just kind of the way the snaps have been.”

“But we love TB,” Swinney added. “He’s a great player. But he can only rep so many places.”

An ankle injury severely impacted Brown’s 2024 season, forcing him to take a redshirt. In 2023, he earned freshman All-American honors and led the Tigers in both receptions (52) and receiving yards (531).

Overall, this season, Brown has played a total of 266 snaps across 10 games (two starts). The explosive 5-foot-11, 185-pound talent from nearby Greenville High School has caught 19 passes for 160 yards.

“He’s got a lot of great days ahead,” Swinney said. “He’s just a [redshirt] sophomore, got a couple more years left.”
