CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney spoke to the media following Wednesday’s practice at the Poe Indoor practice facility. The Tigers look to become bowl eligible for a 27th consecutive season when they host Furman Saturday (4:30 p.m., CW) at Memorial Stadium.
Here are the topics Swinney addressed on Wednesday evening.
–Swinney was asked about the offensive line, which will feature a new lineup after the Tigers lost starting guards Walker Parks (ankle) and Brayden Jacobs (foot) to season-ending injuries. Clemson plans to start Collin Sadler at left guard and Harris Sewell at right guard. Swinney said redshirt senior Dietrick Pennington and Ronan O’Connell will also play.
“That is a veteran group and Dietrick ought to be able to get in there as a backup. He has played a lot of ball,” Swinney said. “Ronan O’Connell is a redshirt freshman that has gotten some experience this year and when he has been in there, he has played well. We have a couple of other guys that have not played as much on game day, but they have practiced well and know what to do.”
–The Clemson coach was also asked about Cade Klubnik’s mobility. The quarterback has not run as much since hurting his ankle in the Tigers’ win over Boston College on Oct. 11.
“He is better. It is the best it has been in a while,” Swinney said. “Way better than he was two weeks ago. Better than he was last week.”
–Swinney was asked about the health status of defensive tackle Stephiylan Green, who missed last week’s game due to injury.
“I am not going to get into how many snaps guys are practicing, but he is out there practicing everyday and is back available for us,” Swinney said.
–Following the loss to Duke on Nov. 1, Swinney said he was going to speak to his leadership council, which includes his younger players. The Clemson coach said those conversations went well.
“It was great and that is between me and those players. But yeah, I meet with guys all the time, but specifically, where we were at that point in the season, I really wanted to meet with each group — first year, second year and third year guys. I meet with the seniors all the time, twice a week as it is.
“It was good, very good. That is actually one of my positives from this season that I might not have had if everything had gone the way we wanted. So, a lot of growth in those guys and good communication.”
