Furman at Clemson: 5 Things to Watch For

Clemson will honor its seniors on Saturday as the Tigers host Furman in the final home game of the season.

The program will be looking for its sixth win of the season, which would make Clemson bowl-eligible for the 27th consecutive year, including 2004, when the Tigers declined an invitation. Clemson has appeared in a bowl in 20 straight seasons, which is the fourth-longest active streak in the country and ties for the 11th longest in FBS history.

The Tigers lead the all-time series against the Paladins 44-10-4 and have won 32 straight in the series.

1. Fun Facts: Guided by head coach Walter Riggs, Clemson earned a 14-6 road victory against Furman Purple Hurricane on Oct. 31, 1896. It was the first football game in program history for the Tigers. The last time Furman beat Clemson was way back in 1936.

2. Military Appreciation Day: On top of it being Senior Day, the school will also be holding its annual Military Appreciation Day, and nobody celebrates its military roots quite like Clemson does.

Saturday’s game will be Clemson’s 32nd Military Appreciation Day. The history of the special day dates to 1994, when Clemson had a special flyover for the game against Georgia Tech on Nov. 12, just one day after Veterans Day. The flyover of four F-16s from Shaw Air Force Base during pregame was the highlight of the celebration that day.

Clemson has a 27-4 record in the previous 31 Military Appreciation Day games. The Tigers have won 17 such games in a row, with the last loss coming against Virginia Tech in 2007.

The Tigers don purple uniforms for the Military Appreciation Day game in reverence to the Purple Heart, the oldest United States military decoration. This will be the second time this season that Clemson has broken out the purple jerseys. The Tigers also wore them in the first road game of the season, a 24-21 last-second loss at Georgia Tech in Week 3. However, this will be the first time this season the team has worn all purple.

3. Let’s See Some of the Younger Guys: Clemson comes into this one as a more than 40-point favorite, and this is one of those games where you’d hope a big lead is built and some of the younger guys can get some quality reps.

Outside of a spot start in place of an injured Cade Klubnik, backup quarterback Chris Vizzina hasn’t seen a whole lot of time this season. He’s not been since that start against SMU, and he could use all of the work he can get. Get up early and get Klubnik out of there.

It would also be nice to get a look at true freshman Chris Denson. The left-handed signal caller was extremely raw when he arrived on campus and is redshirting this season. Getting him some work on Saturday would give fans an idea of how much progress he’s made with his development.

A couple of those younger offensive linemen could also use some work. True freshmen Ronan O’Connell and Mason Wade are two who come to mind.

On the other side of the ball, redshirt freshman Darien Mayo could probably benefit from some in-game action. Mayo has logged just 26 snaps all season. Redshirt freshmen defensive tackles Champ Thompson and Hevin Brown-Shuler both need some work, as well.

4. Pound the Rock: If there’s ever a game in which Clemson should be able to run it at will, this is it. No knock on Furman, but the talent disparity between these two teams is significant.

Garrett Riley boasted on Wednesday about how “balanced” the offense has been, and while overall on paper that’s true, there have been so many instances of this offense abandoning the run too quickly. Feed Adam Randall early, then start working those other backs into the rotation.

We should see plenty of Gideon Davidson, David Eziomume and Keith Adams Jr. before it’s all said and done.
