Former Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence led the Jacksonville Jaguars to their third straight win this past Sunday, a 25-3 victory over the Tennessee Titans.
Bill Cowher is among the CBS Sports NFL studio analysts who loved what they saw on Sunday from Lawrence, who completed 16-of-27 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, while also rushing for 25 yards on three carries.
“I sense a very confident Trevor Lawrence right now, more so than I did a month ago,” said Cowher, the former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer.
Lawrence threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jakobi Meyers, putting the Jaguars ahead for good late in the first quarter of Sunday’s game. Then, after a Titans fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Lawrence tossed a 21-yard TD pass to Brenton Strange on the first play of the second quarter.
Following a penalty against the Titans, Lawrence ran for a two-point conversion to give the Jags a 15-3 lead.
“That first half was one of the best halves of football that I’ve seen from him,” said CBS Sports studio analyst Matt Ryan, the 2016 NFL MVP and a four-time Pro Bowl quarterback.
Overall this season, Lawrence has completed 59.7 percent of his passes for 2,636 yards and 16 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. He has also rushed for 235 yards and five more scores.
The 26-year-old Lawrence is now in his fifth NFL season after being drafted No. 1 overall in 2021. For his NFL career to date, he has a 62.7 completion percentage with 16,451 passing yards, 85 touchdown passes and 57 interceptions. He has also rushed for 1,318 yards and 19 touchdowns on 288 career carries.
The Jaguars signed Lawrence to a massive five-year, $275 million contract extension (including $142 million fully guaranteed) prior to the 2024 season, when he completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdown passes and seven interceptions in 10 games before being placed on injured reserve in early December after his shoulder injury and concussion.
Of course, Lawrence was labeled as a “generational prospect” coming out of Clemson, and he has had his ups and downs over the start of his NFL career. He has experienced his share of success while also battling his share of adversity and struggling with inconsistent play, turnovers and injuries.
But right now, CBS Sports studio analyst Nate Burleson believes Lawrence is silencing his critics.
“A month or so ago, I talked about quarterbacks playing themselves into a future contract with the team, and I brought his name up. And I was asking the question, ‘Who is Trevor Lawrence and who is he going to be at the end of this season?’” said Burleson, who played in the NFL for 11 years as a wide receiver with the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions.
“Listen, I’m just a former player that’s posing questions. It wasn’t a shot at Trevor Lawrence. But when he’s playing well, I will give him credit. And right now, he is hushing all of those critics up that are asking, ‘Is he our guy?’ And [Sunday], he was just that.”
Lawrence and the Jaguars are currently 8-4 and sitting atop the AFC South with the 8-4 Indianapolis Colts. The Jags own the tiebreaker due to having a better record against common opponents.
The Jags and Colts are set to square off this Sunday in Jacksonville, and the two teams will meet again in Week 17 in Indianapolis.
