Clemson added a big piece to its 2027 recruiting class on Thursday.
Four-star in-state wideout Trey Wimbley announced a commitment to the Tigers, about a week after picking up an offer, as well as announcing he was reclassifying up from the 2028 class.
Wimbley is the fifth commitment of the 2027 Clemson recruiting class and the first wide receiver. He was on hand for every home game this season.
Wimbley is a local product out of nearby Daniel High School. Usually, when fans hear about a commit coming from Daniel, it is quickly followed by a roll of the eyes. Clemson’s roster has been littered with players from the local high school, with many former walk-ons joining the program via Daniel.
However, the Lions have also produced some players who have worked out really well. DeAndre Hopkins, Shaq Lawson, Jarvis Jenkins and DeShawn Williams all hail from that high school. That is just a few of the names to have had successful careers who came out of Daniel, and Wimbley could easily add his name to that list.
Wimbley is a playmaker with soft hands. He went over the 1,000-yard mark as a sophomore last season, averaging right at 19 yards per reception, while reeling in 14 touchdown catches.
Wimbley also runs track, meaning the Tigers will get one more wide receiver with plenty of speed. The program just signed three wideouts on Wednesday, with two of those also being track stars.
Before he announced the plans to reclassify, SMU and Ole Miss had already offered Wimbley. Tennessee and Georgia had begun showing interest, as evidenced by his game-day visits to those schools during the regular season.
The 6-foot prospect should make for a great addition to the wide receiver room. At this point, it’s hard to put much stock into where he’s ranked. It was only a week ago that he was considered a member of the 2028 class.
Before he decided to reclass, he was ranked inside the Top 60 overall and as the 12th best receiver in the 2028 class. He was also ranked No. 2 in the state.
Wimbley’s addition to the class gives four-star QB commit Kharim Hughley a pass catcher with a high ceiling coming in alongside him. His commitment now gives Clemson five verbal pledges and puts the Tigers’ class at 10th nationally.
