Swinney Credits Luke, Branding for Uptick In OL Recruiting

CLEMSON — Matt Luke absolutely crushed in his first full recruiting cycle at Clemson.

The Tigers signed a total of six offensive linemen on Wednesday, all being major college prospects. Head coach Dabo Swinney acknowledges how far the Tigers have come when it comes to landing highly-touted types of linemen.

“Obviously, time will tell the true story on that, but coming in the door? Elite,” Swinney said. “These are guys that could have gone anywhere they wanted to go. They had offers from all over the country.”

Swinney gives much of the credit for the success to Luke, who just finished up his first full recruiting cycle with the Tigers. Although Luke was in place over the back half of the last cycle, as well.

“I think he has done a great job,” Swinney said. “Coming in his first year, he was kind of behind — I kind of already had Brayden (Jacobs), so I tell him I am taking credit for that. Easton (Ware) was already committed. But he has to get some credit because if we hadn’t hired Matt Luke, we could have lost both of those guys. He was able to solidify that.”

Swinney also credits how far the program has come when it comes to national prominence. Despite recruiting being more transactional than ever, branding still plays a part, and with the success Clemson has experienced over the past decade, it’s a much easier sell than it was when Swinney took over.

“He had a full cycle to go out, and he just did an amazing job,” Swinney said.

“That is just where we are as a program. That is what winning does. This Paw, we can walk in anywhere. From California to international. We can go anywhere. Because everybody knows the Paw. Now we can go out and recruit the best of the best, and we have been able to do that. Especially with this offensive line. These guys are big, athletic, strong dudes that, like I said, could have gone anywhere they wanted to go, but they chose Clemson.”
