When Clemson takes the field against Penn State next Saturday, the Tigers’ defense is going to look much different.
There will be no Peter Woods, DeMonte Capehart, or T.J. Parker, as all three have opted out. Jahiem Lawson and Wade Woodaz are both out with injuries. That is a lot of production that must be replaced.
With so many key pieces missing from the front seven, the Tigers are going to need some of the younger players to step up, and linebacker Sammy Brown has been encouraged by what he’s seen in practice.
“I am really confident in the guys that are stepping up and stepping into those roles,” Brown said.
Two players in particular have really stood out. Redshirt freshmen Champ Thompson and Darien Mayo. While the two have combined for just 102 snaps this season, both are taking advantage of their opportunities on the practice field.
“Mayo and Champ have really been coming along in these bowl practices,” Brown said. “Especially Champ. I have been really excited watching the film. He has been hooping in practice.”
Thompson has appeared in seven games this season, registering his first career sack against Boston College. After patiently waiting his turn for much of his first two seasons, this Saturday, Thompson will have a chance at seizing the moment.
“It has been cool to see him kind of step up in that role, and I think he is going to be a good part of our game,” Brown said.
