Orlovsky: Lawrence Is NFL’s Most Improved Player

Former Clemson star Trevor Lawrence threw for three touchdowns and ran for another on Sunday in Week 16 of the NFL season, as the Jacksonville Jaguars (11-4) extended their winning streak to six games with a 34-20, statement victory over the Denver Broncos (12-3), who saw their 11-game winning streak come to an end.

Lawrence completed 23 of his 36 passes for 279 yards and had touchdown passes of 12, 3 and 10 yards, while also rushing 20 yards and a 1-yard score on six carries.

On ESPN’s Get Up show Monday, several analysts — including former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky and former NFL head coach Rex Ryan — reacted to the Jaguars’ win over the Broncos and weighed in on whether Lawrence has finally reached his potential.

Of course, Lawrence was considered a “generational prospect” coming out of Clemson, and the 2021 No. 1 overall pick has had his ups and downs to this point as a professional. But right now, he’s in the midst of arguably the best stretch of his five-year NFL career.

“The last month of the season, this guy has been that generational talent we talked about,” Ryan said. “The minute he stepped on Clemson’s field, he was a generational talent. He would have been the first guy taken his freshman year, his sophomore year, his third year. We’re finally seeing why.”

Lawrence has been on fire of late, averaging 270.5 passing yards per game over his last four games with 12 total touchdown passes and no turnovers. He also has two rushing touchdowns over that span, giving him 14 total TDs.

On Sunday, the 26-year-old became the first player in Jaguars history with multiple seasons with 25 passing touchdowns. He has thrown for 26 touchdowns in 15 games this season and had 25 passing touchdowns over 17 games in 2022, when he earned Pro Bowl honors.

Lawrence’s breakout campaign under first-year Jaguars head Liam Coen has helped Jacksonville hit the 11-win mark for the first time since 2007. The Jags are currently sitting atop the AFC South and are very much in the hunt for the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

“Let me say this about Trevor. I would say, truly I think Trevor’s the most improved player in the NFL this year,” Orlovsky said. “I called Trevor’s games last year. On Monday Night Football, we called a game right around this time, in Buffalo. He was a shell of himself. He was totally shocked mentally. And now that Liam Coen is there — and Liam Coen absolutely is one of the three or four names for Coach of the Year – if you ask me the one quarterback in the AFC, that if he reached his potential this year, could go head-to-head with [Buffalo Bills QB] Josh Allen, it would be Trevor Lawrence. He’s that physically talented. … This dude is playing quarterback, he’s playing it as good as anybody right now.”

Up next for the Jaguars is a road game against the Indianapolis Colts this Sunday.
