4-Star QB Commit Confident Morris Is Right Hire

Kharim Hughley is too young to remember the first stint Chad Morris had at Clemson as the offensive coordinator.

With him still being a junior in high school and Morris leaving Clemson for the head coaching job at SMU more than a decade ago, the four-star quarterback can only go by what he’s been told about Morris’s high-flying offense with the Tigers.

However, one thing Hughley is sure of is his faith in Dabo Swinney, and the current Clemson commit stands firmly behind whatever decision the longtime Tigers’ head coach believes is best for the program.

Hughley has yet to meet Morris in person, but they did have a FaceTime call with one another earlier in the week.

“I don’t know much about Coach Morris yet,” Hughley told The Clemson Insider. “But I have 100% trust in Coach Dabo and the decisions he makes. We have communicated through text, and we had a FaceTime call, but I will meet him soon. It is a little different when you meet somebody in person.”

During that call, Morris spent most of the time telling Hughley about some of the players he’s coached and the success those players had.

“He said that he was excited to be back,” Hughley said. “He didn’t talk too much about himself. That is one thing I noticed was he didn’t talk too much about himself. He talks more about the guys he has coached and what they did.”

Assistant quarterbacks coach Tajh Boyd made a stop in to see Hughley and his family on Tuesday. Not only did Boyd dive into how Morris helped develop him as a quarterback, but they also touched on Clemson legend Deshaun Watson.

Hughley attends Gainesville High School, the same school Watson attended, so he is more than familiar with the former first-round NFL Draft pick. Now he knows that without Morris, Watson likely never would have ended up signing with the Tigers.

“He has to be good,” Hughley added of Morris. “Tajh talks highly of him. Coach Swinney talks highly of him. Even our safety commit Harrison (Luke) talks highly of him. Tajh told me that he was his OC, and he was a huge part of Deshaun’s recruitment. That, without Coach Morris, there was no Deshaun.”

Hughley will be back in Clemson for the Elite Retreat on March 7, which will likely be his first opportunity to meet Morris in person and he is anxious to really dive into the details of the offense. However, even without having that discussion yet, Hughley is fully confident that he will fit really well into the plan.

“Like I said, I have trust in Coach Swinney, and I know he made the right hire,” Hughley said. “I can not wait to get up there, meet him, and get more in-depth about the offense.”
