Johnson Adds Element of Explosiveness to Backfield

While Clemson has been reloading its defense through the transfer portal, many have been wondering when the Tigers would address the offense.

With Dabo Swinney choosing not to pursue a portal quarterback, there just aren’t many holes on that side of the ball that need filling. Outside of an offensive lineman or two, Clemson seemed content to stand pat with what they had.

However, the news broke that SMU transfer running back Chris Johnson Jr. was on campus Saturday. Turns out, Swinney was open to adding to his offense if the right option became available. And Johnson is now that guy after making it official on Sunday.

With rising sophomore Gideon Davidson expected to slide into the role of feature back next season, the addition of Johnson would give the Tigers a really good one-two punch in the backfield, seeing as he is one of the fastest backs in the country.

Johnson was clocked at 22.3 mph this season. He won Florida 3A state titles in the 100M and 200M during his high school days.

Adding Johnson to the fold also gives new offensive coordinator Chad Morris another weapon at his disposal and provides the Tigers’ running game with a significant boost. A rushing attack that ranked outside of the Top 100 nationally in 2025. Not to mention, Johnson is the type of player who can also line up out wide. Johnson has the kind of versatility most coaches covet.

However, adding a new running back to the mix also creates a question. Would rising redshirt sophomore David Eziomume still be willing to stick around in 2026? Coming out of the regular season, there were already some questions surrounding his return, but so far, Eziomume has held firm.

Jay Haynes and Jarvis Green are both expected back from injury next season. Again, Davidson is the presumed starter, but Johnson is not being brought in to ride the pine.

At the end of the day, adding Johnson makes the Clemson running back room stronger. Nobody currently in that room is as explosive as he is.

Speed kills, and Johnson has it.
