Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne and the Jacksonville Jaguars saw their season come to a disappointing end on Sunday.
Buffalo scored with just over a minute remaining, and Lawrence threw an interception on the ensuing drive, allowing the Bills to come away with a 27-24 win in the wildcard round of the NFL playoffs, snapping the Jaguars’ eight-game winning streak.
While Jacksonville’s passing attack had thrived during the winning streak, Lawrence found it a little more difficult against a Buffalo defense that was one of the league’s best at defending against the pass. The former Clemson standout finished the day 18-of-30 for 207 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Twice in the fourth quarter, he had touchdown throws to put his team ahead, but it wasn’t enough.
“It was a tough way to end this year,” Lawrence said after the game. “It’s been a fun year. It’s hard to put the right words to it. There’s so much work that’s put into any season, and then you look at the year we’ve had and some of the adversity, the way we finished the year, and the confidence we were playing with it. It just ends so suddenly when you have a game like that. Obviously, you think you’re gonna keep rolling, and you plan on playing next week. That’s playoff football, and you’ve got to close out those games. We weren’t able to do that today. That part’s disappointing.”
Etienne was on the receiving end of one of those touchdown passes. He had 10 carries for 67 yards, while also reeling in five catches for 49 yards with the score.
This was Lawrence’s second time leading Jacksonville to the playoffs, and there is no doubt that much improvement was made in year one under head coach Liam Coen. The Jaguars won the AFC South, finishing 13-4 in the regular season, one game ahead of the Titans.
“I have so much confidence in this group, and the staff and the direction we’re heading,” Lawrence said. “But that doesn’t make you feel better about the season today when we feel like there was more out there for us.”
