Everyone Playing ‘Catch-Up’ to Clemson

DJ Huggins is just one of two wide receivers in the 2027 recruiting class to hold an offer from Clemson.

Huggins (Harrison, GA) is one of those under-the-radar type of targets. The Tigers were his first Power-4 offer, and to this day, it’s still the only one he has. Although he has been hearing from both Georgia and Arkansas of late.

However, it’s Clemson that has been recruiting him the hardest. Despite the Tigers leaning heavily into the transfer portal since the end of the season, the staff has been sure to keep making Huggins feel like a priority. Wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham visited with him just last week.

“Coach Grisham came by. They have been communicating with me a lot lately,” Huggins told The Clemson Insider. “From other schools, it’s definitely been a little slower with everyone worried about the transfer portal, but Clemson, it’s still steady building that connection, that bond and everything.”

One of the things Grisham talked about with Huggins during the recent visit was the addition of Chad Morris as the Tigers’ new offensive coordinator.

“He said he’s a legit dude,” Huggins added. “That he knows what he is doing and that he is definitely a very, very smart coach.”

Huggins currently only has two visits on his docket. He will visit Georgia for a junior day later this month and he plans to attend the Elite Retreat in Clemson on March 7. That visit will provide Huggins with his first opportunity to meet Morris face-to-face, although they have already exchanged some text messages.

“He’s texted me, just a liitle small talk,” Huggins said. “I have definitely heard great things about him. Excited to see what he’s all about in person and see the offensive scheme and everything.”

On top of meeting Morris, Huggins is looking forward to just getting back to campus. He visited twice during the season, attending the season-opener against LSU, then returning later in the season when the Tigers hosted Florida State. However, this next visit for the Elite Retreat will be the most time he’s gotten to spend on campus, seeing as the event takes up most of the weekend.

“I am definitely looking forward to meeting Coach Morris,” Huggins said. “Just start building a connection with him, meeting him. Then, just being back up there with my family, we always enjoy going up there. Looking forward to all of that.”

As a junior, Huggins had 74 catches for 1,127 yards with 12 touchdowns. he averaged 16.8 yards per reception and 102.5 yards per game.

Those kinds of numbers are what attracted the Tigers in the first place, and to this point, when it comes to his recruitment, it’s Clemson and then everyone else.

“Pretty much everybody is playing catch-up to Clemson,” Huggins said. “
