Despite Tuesday’s overtime loss at home to NC State, Clemson moved up in ESPN’s latest men’s college basketball power rankings.
The 80-76 loss to the Wolfpack marked the first loss in ACC play for the Tigers (16-4, 6-1 ACC).
Prior to that, Clemson had won nine consecutive games overall this season and a program-record 14 straight ACC regular season games dating back to last season. The Tigers had also been undefeated at home this season, and had won 14 straight games at Littlejohn Coliseum dating back to last season, before falling to NC State.
Even with the loss, Clemson moved up to No. 21 in ESPN’s updated power rankings. The Tigers were previously ranked No. 23.
“Clemson’s nine-game winning streak was snapped Tuesday when NC State came to town and handed the Tigers their first ACC loss of the season,” ESPN’s Jeff Borzello wrote. “It was a difficult night for the ACC’s most efficient defense. The Tigers allowed 1.12 points per possession, the most an opponent has scored against them since Alabama back on Dec. 3. NC State also turned the ball over just seven times in 45 minutes, the lowest turnover percentage anyone has had against Clemson all season.”
Clemson returns to the court on Saturday when it travels to Georgia Tech for a 12 p.m. tipoff on ACC Network.
Arizona remains the No. 1 team in ESPN’s power rankings, with UConn, Michigan, Duke and Nebraska rounding out the top five, in that order.
Along with Clemson and Duke, other ACC teams in the power rankings include Virginia (No. 16), Louisville (No. 22) and North Carolina (No. 23).
Clemson is currently ranked No. 18 in both the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll.
