Clemson Beats Tech to Pass Tar Heels in ACC Record Books

It is not often Clemson basketball can say it passed North Carolina in the ACC record books. But that is what has happened.

Thanks to Saturday’s 77-63 victory over Georgia Tech at the McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta, the Tigers won their 12th straight road game, tying them for fourth all-time in ACC history, passing UNC’s Michael Jordan led teams that won 11 straight from 1983-’85.

GETTING IT DONE

Despite leading scorer R.J. Godfrey spending most of his time on the bench in foul trouble, No. 18 Clemson had four players score in double digits, led by Jake Wahlin’s 13 points and 8 rebounds. Nick Davidson also added 13 points and six rebounds, while Dillon Hunter tallied 11 points and five rebounds.

Ace Buckner came off the bench to score 12 points in the victory. Godfrey did score nine points, grabbed four rebounds and had two assists in 18 minutes. He finished the game with four fouls.

Clemson improved to 17-4 overall and 7-1 in the ACC.

HALFTIME MOMENTUM

Hunter drained a three-pointer from the right wing as time expired in the first half, giving the Tigers a 35-33 lead at halftime.

The three-pointer sparked a Clemson run that gave the Tigers control of the game to start the second half. They used an 11-1 run, counting Hunter’s three, in the first six minutes of the second half to grab a 43-34 lead.

They extended their lead to 14 points, 54-40, when Jestin Porter drained a three with 12:18 to go. Clemson was 11 of 28 (39 percent) from behind the arc and made 10 of its last 16 attempts from deep.

The Tigers led by as many as 16 points in the second half. They used a 12-0 run at one-point to extend their lead.

POINTS IN THE PAINT

Clemson has won the points in the paint in 17 of its 21 games this season and is now 16-1 in those games.

The Tigers outscored Tech (11-9, 2-5 ACC) 30-20 in the paint.

Clemson scored a season-high 52 points in the paint in a 97-59 win over Gardner-Webb and have eclipsed the 50-point plateau twice. They scored 50 in a loss at Alabama.

In ACC play, the Tigers are averaging 33.7 points per game.
