Some Big ACC News

Some big news from around the ACC came on Monday.

A longtime college football coach, and most recently ACC coordinator, is hanging up his whistle.

Florida State offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn announced his retirement from coaching on Monday.

FSU announced head coach Mike Norvell has promoted co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Tim Harris Jr. to replace Malzahn as the Seminoles’ offensive coordinator.

This marks the end of the Malzahn’s 35-year coaching career, including his time as a high school coach, college assistant and college head coach.

“After 35 years, it’s time for me to step away from coaching,” Malzahn said in a statement. “I am excited to spend more time with my family and focus on the next chapter of my life. I want to thank Coach Norvell for giving me the opportunity to coach at such a prestigious program. I will continue to follow Florida State, and I believe great things are ahead for the program under Coach Norvell’s leadership and for the offense under Tim Harris.”

During Malzahn’s lone year with the Seminoles in 2025, FSU finished No. 1 in the ACC in total offense (472.1 yards per game) and rushing offense (218.7 yards per game). FSU’s 472.1 yards per game was the sixth-highest average in the nation, and its 218.7 rushing yards per game ranked 11th nationally.

Malzahn, 60, served as the head coach at Arkansas State (2012), Auburn (2013-20) and UCF (2021-24), winning one SEC Championship (2013), a Sun Belt title (2012) and two SEC West Division titles (2013, 2017) during his career as a head coach.

Overall, he went 105-62 across his 13 seasons as a head coach and made a national championship game appearance with Auburn in 2013 against FSU. He earned a slew of honors in 2013, including the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award, Bobby Bowden National Collegiate Coach of the Year Award and SEC Coach of the Year, among others.

Clemson is set to play Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Oct. 31.
