Spring Preview: Freshmen Wide Receivers

CLEMSON — Clemson is getting an infusion of high-level talent at the receiver position.

The Tigers have three freshman wideouts who will be taking part in spring practice, which begins later this month, and all three were some of the highest-rated players signed in the 2026 class.

Naeem Burroughs, Connor Salmin and Gordon Sellers all rank among the top five players signed by Clemson. And all three have legit speed. Salmin and Burroughs have elite speed, and that is something you can never have too much of.

With TJ Moore back and Bryant Wesco expected to be back after suffering a scary injury last season, the starting spots on the outside are pretty much locked up. There’s also the possibility of Tristan Smith returning, if he wins his lawsuit against the NCAA for an extra year of eligibility.

Having said that, Salmin and Sellers are both quite capable of carving out roles for themselves in the rotation. Some of that will depend on how quickly they can soak things up throughout the spring.

“Connor Salmin, this is a kid we got on early,” head coach Dabo Swinney said. “He is an elite, elite speed guy. He is as fast of a guy as we have probably signed in a long time. He can run, run, run. Trains with Olympic people. He’s got national times. A big-bodied kid that can really, really go.”

“Same thing with Gordon Sellers. Another big body who has a ton of diversity to his game.”

With Antonio Williams off to the NFL, Tyler Brown is presumed to be the heir apparent in the slot. Having said that, Burroughs is going to play, and probably quickly. He’s too good to keep off the field. He can take the top off opposing defenses, as evidenced by his 22 yards per catch during his final high school season. He’s also a very capable return man. Burroughs has been tabbed as an instant-impact player by multiple recruiting analysts.

“I think he is as good as anybody in the country,” Swinney said. “He is a great player and a great kid.”

What is certain is that the Tigers have added some quality pieces to its wide receiver room, which could make it one of the deeper ones in the country, depending on how quickly the freshmen catch on.
