Spring Preview: Freshman Tayveon Wilson Joins TE Room

Clemson will enter the spring with a fairly deep group of tight ends.

While Josh Sapp did transfer out, the Tigers still have plenty of experience with Olsen Patt-Henry and Christian Bentancur at the top of the depth chart. Logan Brooking also returns after redshirting in 2025, and the coaches have raved about his progress. Banks Pope adds some quality depth to the room, as well.

With freshman Tayveon Wilson being added to the mix, tight ends coach Kyle Richardson has a fairly solid group to work with.

“Kyle has done a great job of identifying the right guys,” head coach Dabo Swinney said. “We haven’t offered many guys, but when we’ve gotten them committed, they’ve been locked in. I think our tight end room is one of the best rooms in the building.”

With guys like Patt-Henry and Bentancur leading the charge and Brooking expected to play more, opportunities could be limited for Wilson in 2026. Having said that, it’s never too early to look ahead.

Wilson is a different kind of athlete. He was a do-it-all type of player for his high school team, playing quarterback, running back, receiver and tight end on the offensive side of the ball. He was a three-time all-conference and all-state football player.

He was also a standout in baseball, basketball and track, where he was part of a team that won a state title in the 4x100M relay. He even earned all-state honors on the baseball diamond in 2023.

That’s versatility. And that is something that should pay dividends for the Tigers at some point down the road. Having said that, it’s likely Wilson is headed for a redshirt, barring something unforeseen.

“Tayveon is a five-sport guy,” Swinney said. “He’s been a great athlete. Had to play quarterback (last) year for his team, but just a great athlete. Basketball, baseball, he has done it all. And track.”
