This week, ESPN analyst Jay Bilas released his updated iteration of The Bilas Index — his list of the best 68 men’s college basketball teams this season.
So, how high is Bilas on Clemson, and head coach Brad Brownell?
Clemson came in at No. 29 in The Bilas Index, and Bilas raved about Brownell and his latest coaching job this season.
Bilas’ article was published on Tuesday, before Clemson fell to Wake Forest, 85-77, on Wednesday in Winston-Salem – the Tigers’ third straight loss.
Here’s what Bilas wrote about Brownell and Clemson, which is currently 20-7 overall and 10-4 in ACC play:
“It’s not as if he hasn’t proved it over and over again, but Brad Brownell is one of the best coaches in the country. Clemson has an almost entirely new roster … After watching Clemson early and analyzing the roster, there was no way to predict this level of success. It is a triumph of teaching, coaching and competitive will through Brownell. To me, the true measure of a great coach isn’t just how he does when he has the talent. Brownell can do it when he doesn’t. Amazing.”
Prior to the three-game losing streak – a home loss to Virginia Tech, and road losses to Duke and Wake Forest – Clemson had won 13 of its previous 14 games. Before the loss at Duke on Feb. 14, the Tigers had won 14 consecutive ACC road games dating back to last season – tied for the second longest streak in ACC history (Duke from 1962-64).
Brownell’s Tigers return to the court on Saturday when they host Florida State at Littlejohn Coliseum (12 p.m., The CW).
Michigan is the No. 1 team in The Bilas Index, with Arizona, Duke, Houston and Iowa State rounding out the top five.
Along with Clemson and Duke, other ACC teams in The Bilas Index include North Carolina (No. 15), Virginia (No. 21), Louisville (No. 23), SMU (No. 36), Miami (No. 38), NC State (No. 39), Virginia Tech (No. 53), Cal (No. 63) and Stanford (No. 64).
