6-run Inning Hands Clemson Second Loss

Georgia Southern scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning, including a grand slam from leftfielder Sean White, as the Eagles stunned No. 8 Clemson, 6-1, Tuesday at SRP Park in North Augusta, S.C.

The loss snapped the Tigers’ seven-game win streak, which dated back to a loss to South Carolina on Feb. 27.

Clemson’s lone run came in the in the bottom of the second inning when Tyler Lichtenberger hit his first home run as Tiger.

Georgia Southern pitching kept the Tigers at bay. Clemson did not have its first at-bat with a runner in scoring position until Ty Dalley came up with Lichtenberger and Jason Fultz on first and second with one out.

However, Dalley flew out to centerfield and Jarren Purify was thrown out on a slow roller to third base, as reliever Craig Kalkbrenner came in and ended the Clemson threat.

The Tigers (15-2) got a runner in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Lichtenberger grounded out to second base to end the inning. Lichtenberger finished his night 2-for-4 at the plate.

The Eagles’ Alex Mason (2-0) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.

Clemson pitching was good for the most part, except for the second inning. In the decisive second inning, the Eagles got a lead-off double from Brady Christman and White’s grand slam, but in between they drew three walks, one batter was hit by a pitch and a wild pitch allowed one run to score.

Eston Simpson suffered the loss, his first of the season. He allowed three earned runs on one hit. He walked three and hit one batter. Clemson used seven pitchers in the loss.

Georgia Southern (5-11) was 3-for-23 with runners on base and 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Max Prozny led the Eagles at the plate with a 3-for-4 night, including two doubles.
