CLEMSON — Georgia Tech snapped Clemson’s 13-game home winning streak Thursday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, handing the No. 8 Tigers their first ACC loss and first run-rule loss of the season in a 10-0 victory in seven innings.
The matchup marked the first top-10 meeting of the season for both programs and Clemson’s first home night game of the year.
The fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets (16-2, 3-1 ACC) entered the series ranked first nationally in runs scored per game (13.4 rpg), while Clemson came in third in the country in runs allowed per game. The Tigers were allowing 2.6 runs per game.
The loss also marked Clemson’s second defeat this week to a team from Georgia and the first time the Tigers have fallen to the Yellow Jackets with Aidan Knaak starting on the mound.
Clemson’s (15-3, 0-1 ACC) offense struggled to generate anything against Georgia Tech starter Tate McKee. The Yellow Jackets’ right-hander kept the Tigers quiet at the plate, holding Clemson to a single hit while walking five in six innings of work.
McKee recorded the quickest innings of the game, retiring Clemson in order on just three pitches in the third inning.
Georgia Tech brought in Jake Lankie in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game for the Yellow Jackets.
Out of 28 at bats for Clemson, Jarren Purify and Jay Dillard are the only Tigers to place a hit all night. Clemson also had a total of five base runners stranded, including a bases-loaded situation.
Georgia Tech proved why they are the top-scoring team in college baseball once again. They dominated at the plate, collecting 12 hits, including three home runs and four doubles.
Clemson starter Knaak opened the game strong, striking out five of the first six outs through the first two innings.
However, he could not hold off Georgia Tech’s offense for long. Knaak finished the night with eight strikeouts, tying his season high, but allowed nine hits, three home runs, and eight runs over four innings of work. The Yellow Jackets scored their first five runs off of home runs.
With Georgia Tech adding more runs in the fifth inning and no outs recorded, Clemson turned to the bullpen and brought in junior Justin LeGuernic, who entered the game with a 0.77 ERA. LeGuernic pitched a complete three innings and allowed the Yellow Jackets three hits and two runs.
Both offenses were quiet through the first two innings before Georgia Tech broke through in the third. Yellow Jackets leadoff hitter Drew Burress launched a two-run home run over the right-field wall to put Georgia Tech on the board first.
A few batters later, Vahn Lackey followed suit with a two-run home run of his own, giving the Yellow Jackets a 4-0 lead.
Georgia Tech continued to add to its lead in the fifth inning when Burress hit his second home run of the game, extending the lead.
The Yellow Jackets later pushed across additional runs on an RBI single, and a Clemson error allowed another run to score. Will Baker added an RBI double, helping Georgia Tech extend its lead to 9-0.
Georgia Tech added one more to their lead on an RBI single with two outs in the top of the seventh to give them a 10-run advantage.
