CLEMSON – On March 6, Clemson’s social media team put out a video of Chad Morris telling his players how hard he was going to coach them and how they needed to let him and the offensive staff do just that for them.
Clemson’s new offensive coordinator has not held back on what he expects from his players. Before the Tigers broke for spring break last Wednesday, his players got an idea what that will be like in a game-situation, as they scrimmaged at Memorial Stadium for two hours.
“Everyday is a scrimmage environment with Coach Morris,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. “He never stops. I love that (about him).”
Morris is described as loud, though he does not use a microphone during practice like Swinney and defensive coordinator Tom Allen do. Besides being loud, he is also going full speed on every play and every repetition.
Morris enjoys coaching, which is why he reached out to Swinney and asked if he could get his old job back. He had been out of coaching for a year, so he could watch his son, Chandler, quarterback the Virginia Cavaliers to the program’s first 11-win season.
“It is about how you teach,” he said. “You have to change the teaching method with the players too, now. You cannot get up there and lecture them all the time. You have to get up there and you have to constantly change. The way players learn these days, you have to constantly change how they learn. The attention span is just so long, so you have to be flexible in how you teach to get the best out of your players.
“That is my challenge to our staff. This is what I demand as a coordinator, and this is what we have to get done. Here is how we are going to get it done and giving guys a plan.”
Those things showed up in the scrimmage, where the offense was charged with a lot of procedures penalties and other things they had not been doing in practice. This is when Morris’ hard-love-coaching shows up at its best.
“The speed of the game, and all of that stuff, he has been great, He has been awesome.” Swinney said.
The Tigers return to the practice fields to conclude spring drills on March 22. The Orange and White Spring Game is set for March 28 at 1 p.m.
