CLEMSON – Dabo Swinney was not overly concerned with the way his offense played in the first scrimmage of the spring back on March 11.
Clemson’s head coach admitted he would have been more worried if his defense played bad, but that was not the case. However, Swinney wants to see his offense start showing improvement as the Tigers hit the back half to spring drills this week.
“This will be for them, to see it and to coach off it,” he said.
Swinney would like to see the offense have more of a sense of urgency this week, which concludes with the annual spring game at Memorial Stadium. He would like to see the unit get better, saying the receivers were not always set and the tight ends motions were just average.
He was not thrilled with the way his quarterbacks played, either, saying no one really stood out or did much in the scrimmage.
“Again, you got a lot of guys that are not out there,” Swinney said. “They are not getting live work, so we got some very inexperienced guys and maybe one experienced guy, but that is what we got. We have to get better.”
And that goes for everyone on offense.
“Our urgency has to get better,” Swinney said. “We had some procedure penalties where the ball is getting snapped and we had a big play and it is called back because we are not set.
“We had some snap issues. We did not have enough on the line. It was across the board, stuff that gets you beat. That is what I call losing to Clemson. Things that you control.”
Clemson also had a couple of fumbles, a bad interception, a couple of drops and tipped balls that were picks.
“Tips and overthrows, they get those, right? Nobody really shined, offensively,” Swinney said. “We will watch the tape, and there will be some guys, when you grade them individually, you will see some good stuff.
“But as a unit, it was very average.”
The Orange & White Spring Game will be Saturday (1 p.m.) at Memorial Stadium.
