When the media was allowed to watch the early portion of Clemson’s spring practice Monday, there was a noticeable surprise in the offensive rotation.
The big news from Monday’s practice came at quarterback where true freshman Tait Reynolds was running every quarterback drill that we saw at No. 2, including the team tempo drill. As you’d expect, redshirt junior quarterback Christopher Vizzina was with the first team.
Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris met with the media following Wednesday’s practice and explained why Reynolds was running with the second team, instead of redshirt freshman Chris Denson. Before spring break, Denson was working with the second-team offense.
“Tait has done a really good job this spring, and it was his day to kind of get those reps,” Morris said. “I’ve been pleased with all our guys… but Tait has gotten several reps with the twos, as we’ve rotated those around as well with all our guys. But it was his day. So, he’s done a really good job of growing.”
Reynolds was the No. 3 prospect in the state of Arizona and the 11th-best dual-threat quarterback nationally in the 2026 recruiting class, according to ESPN.
A hamstring injury basically robbed Reynolds of his entire senior season at Queen Creek (Ariz.) High School, but before that, he completed 61.9 percent of his passes for 2,238 yards with 22 touchdowns and only five interceptions as a junior in 2024. He also rushed 137 times for 1,426 yards and 19 touchdowns that year en route to being named by the Arizona Cardinals as the state’s player of the year.
Reynolds signed with Clemson this past December and enrolled in January.
“There’s been growing pains,” Morris added of Reynolds in spring practice. “Any time you have a freshman out there and you’re putting a lot on him, you’re going to have some ups and downs with guys. But again, how does Tait respond when, maybe those periods of practice, maybe doesn’t go the way you want them to go, how does he respond? As a coach, that’s what you look for. … You can coach him extremely hard, as you can all our guys. But he responds the right way.”
