CLEMSON — Though freshman Tait Reynolds has made big strides this spring, is he ready to take over as Clemson’s top quarterback?
New Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris does not feel Reynolds is there just yet. He feels Christopher Vizzina “is our guy” coming out of spring drills.
“At every position people compete, you know,” Morris said. “I think coming out of the spring, CV is our guy. But there is still competition. No one has signed a lifetime contract. We want competition at every position, all across the board.
“So, there are no days off when it comes to this.”
Reynolds has been working with the second team offense this week, which Morris addressed earlier in his conversation with the media on Wednesday.
Morris was asked if the true freshman was capable of pushing Vizzina for the starting job in fall camp.
“I think we got great competition going on right now with our quarterback situation. I really do,” Morris said. “I think they have all taken the steps in the right direction. CV is our top guy, and he has gotten the reps there and has really progressed.
“I have been really pleased with the way he has proceeded and grew this spring.”
Vizzina has grabbed the top spot due to the consistency he has shown in the Tigers’ 12 practices to this point. The redshirt junior’s confidence is what has allowed him to get an edge at this point in the competition.
“I have been really impressed with how he has progressed, as the whole team has, offensively, and how he has progressed as a quarterback and his comfort level,” Morris said. “So, yeah, he has. He has truly progressed. I have been really pleased watching him through the course of this spring.”
The Tigers will practice again on Thursday before rolling over to the Valley on Saturday for their annual Orange & White Spring Game at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff for the Spring Game is set for 1 p.m.
