Could Denson Move to Another Position?

CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said there was a clear separation in the quarterback race. According to Swinney, Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds have clearly separated themselves from the rest of the pack.

“It really was not close,” Swinney said after Saturday’s Orange & White Spring Game at Memorial Stadium. “We got two guys that separated and that is why you saw what you saw today.”

What we saw Saturday was Vizzina and Reynolds take snaps with the first and second team offense, while Trent Pearman came in third, Brock Bradley fourth and finally Chris Denson.

What does that mean for Denson, who entered the spring as the No. 2 quarterback?

“He is physically as gifted as anybody we got, but just not where he needs to be from a passing game standpoint to compete like he needs to,” Swinney said. “If he stays at quarterback, because I think he is a guy that has a decision to make, he will play for us. He will have a role. He is too talented. We will definitely have a role for him, but he will help our football team no matter what.

“Coming out of spring that is where we are. You have to make tough decisions.”

Could Clemson move Denson to another position?

“Absolutely we could,” Swinney said. “He has to buy into that, so he will have some decisions to make. But if he stays at quarterback, he will help our football team. There is no doubt about it. He has a unique skill set that we can use.

“He is just limited in the pass game right now from where he is from developmentally. He will keep getting better, but we play in five months and we have to keep moving. We have to put the team in position to win.”

Swinney said if Denson wants to move from the quarterback position, he will leave that up to him.

“If he wants to stay at quarterback, he can stay at quarterback. We can use him. If he wants to move and he decides that, then we will talk about that, but that will be his decision,” the Clemson coach said. “I am sure we will talk about it as we go through player meetings the next couple of weeks.”
