CLEMSON — Clemson pushed across four runs in the ninth, but would come up short in trying to rally from a six-run deficit as Miami held on to beat the Tigers 8-6 on Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The win clinched the series for the Hurricanes and sent the Tigers to their sixth loss in the past seven games.
Trailing 8-2 in the ninth, Bryce Clavon hit a solo homer, and Jacob Jarrell had a three-run shot, but it wasn’t enough, as the Tigers were in too deep a hole.
Clemson (19-10, 2-7 ACC) finished with 10 hits in the loss, with Jarrell finishing with three hits, while Clavon and Tryston McCladdie had two each.
The Tigers were just 3-of-21 with runners on base. Two of those hits came in the ninth.
Starter Drew Titsworth went six innings in taking the loss (3-2), allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out seven. He did not walk a batter. Talan Bell had another rough outing, allowing three hits, including a grand slam, in just one inning of work.
Jake Ogden led off the game with a double, with Daniel Cuvet following with an RBI single. After Titsworth got Alex Sosa swinging for the first out, Derek Williams doubled, putting runners at second and third. A groundout by Bryan West put the Hurricanes up 2-0.
A solo shot out to right by Sosa with one out in the third extended the lead to 3-0. It was Sosa’s ninth homer of the season.
Sosa then led off the sixth with a double and after advancing to third on a fielder’s choice, would come home on a fly ball into shallow left. A miscommunication between Nate Savoie and Tyler Lichtenberger allowed the ball to fall in between the two defenders.
The Canes blew it open in the seventh, getting a grand slam from Williams off of reliever Talan Bell, to make it 8-0.
The Tigers cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame, getting a two-out, two-run double by Tryston McCladdie, cutting the deficit to six at 8-2.
