Chandler Morris remains ineligible for the 2026 season.
On Thursday, a Virginia judge denied a preliminary injunction for Virginia quarterback Chandler Morris, according to multiple reports, denying Morris a seventh year of eligibility.
In late February, Morris filed a lawsuit against the NCAA in Virginia state court for a seventh year of eligibility. Morris, 25, took that legal action after his waiver for a seventh year was denied by the NCAA in early January.
Morris’ attorneys argued that mental health issues and a knee injury from his 2022 season at TCU warranted a medical exception, despite already playing in six college seasons. Ultimately, the court denied the injunction and the NCAA won the eligibility case.
In late February, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney commented on the Morris situation. Swinney was asked at a press conference about the possibility of Morris gaining a seventh year of eligibility and the likelihood of him playing for the Tigers next season.
“Starting quarterback for the Clemson Tigers here we go! Breaking news!” Swinney said with a laugh. “No, he’d be playing for Tony Elliott and the Virginia Cavaliers. He’d be at Virginia. I mean, I assume he’d be at Virginia. I’m sure Tony would have something to say about that.”
Of course, Chandler is the son of Chad Morris, who was re-hired as Clemson’s new offensive coordinator in early January after previously serving as the Tigers’ OC from 2011-14.
Chandler is coming off his one and only year at Virginia in 2025, leading the Cavaliers to an ACC title game appearance and a program-record 11 victories, the last of which was a win over Missouri in the Gator Bowl. Morris earned Gator Bowl MVP honors.
For the season, Morris completed 64.7 percent of his passes for 3,000 yards and 16 touchdowns with nine interceptions, while also rushing for 245 yards and five more scores on the ground.
Morris came to UVA to play for former Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott after playing at North Texas in 2024. Before that, Morris was at TCU from 2021-23. He began his college career at Oklahoma in 2020.
In his college career, Chandler has thrown for 9,185 and 63 touchdowns with 26 interceptions. He has also rushed for 887 yards and 15 touchdowns.
